Friday June 24th: Oxjam Fundraiser at SAWA

Well we finally start officially tomorrow with our first fund raising gig down at SAWA. We’ve got 3 lovely bands to help us out tomorrow and it’s only £3 in. All proceeds go towards our fund-raising events, so come along and help us get things moving.

So playing for us tomorrow are the following:

Ican say without a shadow of doubt, Firesuite are one hell of a live band having caught them before and have been long standing supporters of Oxjam events in Sheffield. The video above was actually recorded at last years event.

We think they’re a wonderfully psychedelic band that transport you to somewhere far away! They’re also playing the Oxjam Takedown Festival for us in October too, so thank you again guys.

Glistening Pelt

Well it wouldn’t be Sheffield without some super electro tuneage and these guys have it in spades. With a cannon of work that guarentees you get you shaking your thang ( i think that’s what the young people call it), The Pelt are developing a reputation as the city’s new electro kings.

Once again, they’re playing both tomorrow and Oxjam in October, so again, thank you for being there for us.

The Colliers

A swift trip down the road from Doncaster, sees the progressive popsters come along to join the Oxjam party. With a cavalcade of up-tempo toe tapping indie pop, these guys could put a smile on a statue. We’re delighted that The Colliers agreed to pop along to help us out at Oxjam Towers and we hope you give them a proper Sheffield welcome.

So there you have it, the day is almost upon us when Oxjam Sheffield Takeover 2011 begins. We hope to see you there from 8:30pm, £3 in.

Confirmed For Sheffield Oxjam 2011

So this is the first of several posts highlighting some of the great acts that have so far agreed to play this years Oxjam shindig. We’ve not stopped trying to bring some of Sheffield’s best acts together to create a rather super little festival for you. Without further ado, here’s 3 of the acts who will be performing for your pleasure:

The Spires

One of the most energetic and engaging bands currently in Sheffield, The Spires could get a graveyard dancing. They’d been a band I always had the misfortune to miss whenever they played in Sheffield, but I finally caught up with them twice this year and was blown away by the frenetic live performance of a band clearly in love with what they are doing.

If you’ve never seen them, I recommend them highly and we’re delighted they are one of our headline acts for Sheffield Oxjam 2011. They will be playing the Bencassim Festival in beautiful Barcelona on July 14th and then headlining the BBC Introducing Stage at Tramlines the weekend after!

Gypsy Toes

Next up we have one of Sheffield’s busiest bands around, having hit the live circuit running last October.  Having already supported DD/MM/YYYY, Section Sixtie and The Monday Club, these guys are building up a nice little fanbase. One of the best live bands in Sheffield who win new fans every time they play.

With a somewhat different sound which marks them as unique, comparisons to Gypsy Toes are not easy to come by, but that would do them a disservice. With a vast sound, and the occasional stylophone solo thrown in, not many bands are as brave to try and do something so different.  Also recently confirmed for Tramlines and the Mychoones Festival in Derbyshire, Oxjam will mark their one year live circuit anniversary.

Emily Stancer

Emily is one of Sheffield’s brightest up and coming acts, coupling a powerful yet tender voice, a growing repertoire of self penned songs with super guitar playing. With a monthly residency at The Frog & Parrot on Division Street, Emily is one of the most hard working acts on the Sheffield live scene.

At only 18, Emily’s maturity as an artist blew me away the first time I saw her live and she continues to develop her craft at an alarming rate. Consistently brilliant live, we here at Sheffield Oxjam Towers, feel she’s a massive future ahead of her and are delighted she’ll be performing at Oxjam 2011

So who should we ask??

Well, here in Sheffield Oxjam Towers, once we were confirmed as this years coordinators, it seemed the obvious next step would be to gauge the level of interest and see just who would be interested in playing this years festival.

With a little insight in to how far in advance bands can be booked up, even on an unsigned level, instead of waiting until summer to start chasing acts, we thought why not simply get the ball rolling now and start to confirm who we wanted and book them in.

So, between us here, we’ve probably got 35 acts lined up from Sheffield, South Yorkshire and Derbyshire so far, including one or two surprise guests from over the Pennines too. We’ll be featuring some of the lovely people who have said yes over the next few posts and to be fair, no one has said no, some acts we wanted simply can’t fit us in, are already booked or have holidays to take.

This is an event for Sheffield and despite the crux of the issue being that we want to raise as much money as is possible for a very fine cause, who do you want to see play at this years event? Are there any local bands we’ve missed or simply don’t know about? If so, leave us a link or a message and we’ll take a look and see what we can do. Let’s make this an event to remember.

Exciting times….

It’s not even quite summer yet, but we, at Sheffield Oxjam HQ are already planning for Oxjam in October. Call us keen and we’ll agree.

So we give you a huge warm welcome to our humble blog, with the promise we’ll keep you up to date with the on going’s, confirmations and plans as they arise in order to give Sheffield the best Oxjam party even…all in the name of charity.
